Understanding HVAC Warranties: What Every Homeowner Should Know

Even with the best intentions, however, warranty claims can sometimes be a source of frustration for homeowners. When an unexpected repair is needed, it’s natural to have questions about what is and isn’t covered. That’s why we wanted to take a moment to explain how HVAC warranties work and clear up some common misconceptions.
One of the most important things to understand is that HVAC equipment warranties are established by the manufacturer—not by your local contractor. While we administer warranty claims on our customers’ behalf, we must do so according to the manufacturer’s terms and conditions. We don’t create the warranty policies, nor can we alter or make exceptions to them.
Important Things to Know About HVAC Warranties
- Regular maintenance is required. Most HVAC manufacturers require routine maintenance by a licensed professional to keep your warranty valid. If a warranty claim is submitted, the manufacturer may request proof that the equipment has been properly maintained.
- Replace your air filter regularly. A dirty or clogged filter can restrict airflow, reduce system performance, and contribute to premature component failure. Damage caused by neglected maintenance may not be covered under your manufacturer’s warranty.
- Parts coverage varies by manufacturer. Most manufacturers offer limited parts warranties ranging from 5 to 10 years, while some major components may be covered by a limited lifetime warranty. Coverage and terms vary by manufacturer and equipment model.
- Manufacturer warranties typically do not cover labour. While the manufacturer may provide replacement parts, labour to diagnose and install those parts is generally not included. New installations typically include a one-year installation warranty covering both parts and labour for defects related to the installation itself.
- Consider extended labour coverage. Many HVAC contractors offer optional labour warranties or protection plans that complement the manufacturer’s parts warranty. - Professional installation and service matter. Manufacturers require their equipment to be installed and serviced by licensed HVAC professionals. Improper installation or unauthorized repairs can affect warranty eligibility.
- Installation warranties are generally non-transferable between contractors. HVAC companies typically provide installation warranties only on equipment they have installed. If another contractor performed the installation, they would generally be responsible for any installation-related warranty issues.
- Equipment registration is essential. Most manufacturers require new equipment to be registered within a specified timeframe to qualify for the full warranty period. As part of our customer service, Gas Plus completes this registration on your behalf so you don’t have to worry about missing the deadline.
